AutoModel 0.1

Hey all,

I’ve been meaning to do this for some time now and I finally took a few minutes tonight to put this together.  AutoModel allows you to define a model with only one function (the constructor).

Quick Note

Hi all -

Just wanted to let everybody know I haven't vanished or dropped anything here... things have been super busy @ work and will probably continue to be so for some time, but I'm doing my best to get a new InkType update out along with some new tutorials (Controllers 101 and Views 101 to start), so hang tight!

InkType.org is Unofficially Launched

Yes, that's right... InkType.org has been "Unofficially" launched. I say this is the "unofficial launch" since InkType is still in alpha development and since the User Guide has a lot of work before it is in the shape it needs to be. I went ahead and did an "unofficial" launch because of the large number of people who have shown interest in the project... release early, release often! Errr... well, hopefully that will apply for the launch of this site too.

InkType will no longer be available for download from Developer13.com - instead, visit InkType.org for the current download.

Here are the resources you'll find on the new site:

Interesting Article on Open Source Developers

Author: Martin Brampton

"Open source has become a powerful force. The internet depends on it, as do many commercial operations. But despite the successes, I have a sneaking suspicion that the open source movement could do better.

Building open source software has lately engaged a significant amount of my time, so I have experienced it first hand. Even without that practical knowledge, academic studies on open source make interesting reading.

Open source software is such a remarkable phenomenon that it has attracted psychological and sociological researchers - with some of their quite striking findings."

InkType Alpha 2008.04.03 (Pluto) Released!

InkType is on a journey to become beta... and that journey will take it through the nine planets of our solar system... and this of course discounts the fact that Pluto was stripped of its planetary title and also discounts any possibility of Planet X orbiting around our Sun... So anyway, with InkType's new version codenames, we will start with Pluto. When we reach the Sun, then InkType will officially be beta.

Corny, I know, but I thought InkType deserves some type of code name for its major releases.

There are a LOT of new changes, enhancements and bugfixes with this release... A LOT! Visit the InkType page to download and to read the huge list of changes since the last release!

CodeIgniter 101: Models

Models are the most important part of any database driven web application in CodeIgniter. Models allow us to keep our database code separated from our basic program flow control (Controllers) and our output (Views) which is a necessary discipline of writing clean and well structured code using CodeIgniter. Once you truly get used to the structured discipline and implementation of the Model-View-Controller (MVC) design pattern, you will be absolutely proud to see the difference between the quality and structure of your code. This article discusses the basics of Models in CodeIgniter and how to easily implement basic CRUD functions.

Book Review: CodeIgniter for Rapid PHP Application Development

When I first discovered CodeIgniter, I was overcome with glee after following the video tutorials. It all worked. There was no need to rely on any command-line interaction to "automagically" build my application for me. There was no dependence on PEAR or any other outside resources. There was just CodeIgniter. And it worked.

As soon as I got a grasp on what it was doing and why, I dove into the excellent User Guide and began to feel all warm and fuzzy inside. This felt like home. The user guide is written in such a non-intimidating manner that it invites even the most timid of PHP developers. To this day, I still refer to the user guide when I forget specific syntax or function names and it's a guick in-and-out routine. Nothing at all complex about it.

Not too long ago I came across a book by Packt Publishing called 'CodeIgniter for Rapid PHP Application Development'. At first, I thought to myself, "Why?". The combination of the user guide, the forum and CodeIgniter's well structured code is surely enough for anybody to learn, right? What could this book have that any potential developer could not obtain through these natural resources?

InkType Update

Wow. Snow.

This is our first winter in Flagstaff, Arizona and we are experiencing quite the typical Flagstaff winter. It takes getting used to walking out to your car in the morning with snow up to your knees and hoping your car can burrow through the snow up the drive to the road when you've never really had to deal with snow before. Anyhow, fun stuff!

The alpha of InkType is coming. The current plan is to have it ready for download by this coming weekend if not a day or two before. I have a couple of other (paid) projects that popped up that I'm trying to help a couple of people out with. Between that and getting used to this weird weather, I'm not on the schedule with InkType as I would like to be, but I promise -- it's coming and it's going to kick ass!

Welcome to the New Developer13

I have relaunched Developer13.com on my new project called InkType. InkType is a free and open source blogging platform written on CodeIgniter.

The overall goals for InkType are:

My hope is that the CodeIgniter community will become involved with the project to make it as kick-ass as I envision it being.

I plan to have the alpha version ready for you to download within the next few days. Until then, here are a couple of screenshots of the back end:
